This E3 brought us news of not one, but two new Metal
Gear Solid games! Now, before you quit your day job to become
a full-time Solid Snake, it’s only fair to warn you that the
news is not as good as it first appears.
While we will be getting a brand new adventure for the PS2, the
unfortunately named Snake Eater, the GameCube game, The
Twin Snakes, is a remake of the original MGS.
But, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the 1998 original
is recognized as one of the pivotal entries in modern gaming. This
time around, outside developer Silicon Knights takes the reigns
to give MGS a similar remake treatment to the one the first
Resident Evil got last year. Working with the same basic
plot, script and characters, Twin Snakes looks a lot like
MGS2: Sons of Liberty in terms of graphics and gameplay.
PS2 owners, on the other hand, will get an entirely new game. Unlike
Sons of Liberty, it looks like this time Solid Snake will
be back as our full-time hero, instead of splitting the chores with
Raiden.
The footage we saw didn’t reveal much about the plot, but
what we did glimpse seemed to take place outdoors, in a jungle environment
– a far cry from the traditional MSG corridors and
military bases.
We even got a peek at Snake hunting for food in the jungle –
and taking a giant bite out of a raw fish!
Both Twin Snakes and Snake Eater should be major
gaming events, but we’re not taking any bet sin when either
title will see the light of day.
